Durable, good, mid-priced batter drum head?
I just got a Pearl drum set today and I want a 2nd drum head, my original one for hard playing and rock, and a 2nd one for using brushes on and my sister playing on. I have a 14" snare. What Remo batter heads do you recommend (Diplomat, Ambassador, Emperor, Emperor X, Pinstripe, Smooth White, Powerstroke 3 or 4, or Controlled Sound), and how much do they cost (about)? Also: I need a mid-range, all-around drum head, because I play all styles.
Generally you want a coated head for snare drums, regardless of the genre of music. For jazz and brushes this is critical as they provide the "resistance" necessary for brushes to sound lively. For hard playing you may want to try a Reverse CS Dot. This is where the CS dot is on the underside (or inside) of the head. It provides additional endurance. The best and most versatile snare drum head is a single ply coated head. Try the REMO Coated Ambassodor or the Evans G1 Coated. Both are great all around drum heads for snares. Don't overlook the snare side head either. A bad one can kill the sound of snare. Generally these are thin, single-ply, clear or hazy heads. Try the REMO Ambassodor Snare or the Evans Hazy 200/300.
