Jazz Drum Set?
What do you guys think about this setup? I am a pro drummer, and have played a lot of different kits. This one looks nice. A friend has bought one of these as a smaller kit to carry to smaller gigs and rehearsals. He likes it, but bear in mind that he uses it with his top-quality Yamaha hardware and Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. They sound good in the video, but I wish there was more drumming and less of that guy talking... ;-) It doesn't say what type of wood the Gretsch drums are made of. It might be worth looking into. IMO, the best woods for drums are birch and maple, with birch being my personal preference. Budget sets are often made with mahogany or other softer woods. IIRC, the great Gretsch sets that the jazz innovators used years ago were made of maple. So, if you're looking for a "high quality" kit, you might need to spend more... but having said that, these drums look just fine. They will be very useful if you want to play jazz, or just need a small kit to schlep around. [edit] "Warm tone" is a bit of a marketing term... you could interpret that as a good thing, or you could read it as meaning less projection or a more muffled sound. I'm not saying they are bad drums... but they have to do something to bring the price down to that level, and mahogany is cheaper than birch or maple. I would guess that the shells are made overseas. Personally, I would look for birch or maple, but I'm also aware that those drums cost a lot more. The Gretsch set looks excellent for the price. You can't go wrong with A. Zildjians either. Whatever you choose, I wish you the best in your drumming career. peace .
