Got a drum dial, whats the best tuning for a 14 in snare?
i know somebodys going to say "its whatever you want it to sound like" but i've been playing with it for about a month now and still can't find that good snare sound. its weird because every i tune it to about 85T/82B it just doesn't sound good, well at lease with a remo emperor x coated snare drum head.
Well first off if you are using a drum dial that torques the lugs to a specific tightness, just understand they don't work all that well. The reason is that the friction between the lug and lug box can be different as you move around the head. So even though it seems the drum is evenly in tune, it really isn't. The drum dial is a good way to get in the neighborhood when installing new heads, but it is not really a tuning tool. Also the less expensive the drum is the more the friction is going to vary from lug to lug because the lugs/lug boxes on a less expensive drum are not machined as well.
