Some Rural Residents Cannot Get Broadband Under the Recovery Act
The U.S. Government gave a boost to the economy through the 2011 Recovery Act Program. The Broadband Initiatives Program is one of the projects, and it makes sure that many rural residents without satellite Internet can get Internet for a reduced cost.
For those that are eligible, they get reduced monthly fees, free equipment leasing and installation, plus a number of other benefits. One of the best features of the program is that the monthly fee remains the same for as long as the individual subscribes.
Will the Internet Recovery Act Program have an impact on you?
Not all rural residents benefit from the Broadband Initiative Program. There are limits to what the government and the satellite Internet ISPs can provide, so restrictions were put in place.
Eligibility requires that you not
*Currently have a satellite Internet account
*Be a previous customer of any satellite Internet ISP
*Have the option to subscribe to broadband from a cable company or phone company
*Reside in a rural area being served by a RUS or NTIA loan or grant award
Qualification for the Broadband Recovery Act requires that you
*Have a rural address
*Only be able to get online through dial-up
*Go through a credit check (everyone except Vermont residents)
*Commit to a 12-month satellite Internet contract
Each region is served by a different satellite Internet ISP
Normally, you get to pick which satellite Internet ISP you want to go with. But your choice is made easier because the government created designated zones that each individual satellite Internet ISP can service under the Broadband Initiative Program. Contact a satellite Internet ISP to find out if you are eligible.
