Trombone mutes, Stone Lined Straight-Mute Humes & Berg 11, or Humes & Berg 163 Pixie Metal Straight Mute?
I am a jazz player, so i am going to use the combo of the mute and plunger to get that sound. Which one is better? Money wise, and i am not an expert not a begginer but in the middle somewhere
I'm also a jazz trombonist. Have been for 5 years now. A pixie mute would work, not a regular straight. However, buying a straight would not be my recommendation. While your idea of a pixie mute would work, it would be functional, there are better options. I think you should do 1 of the following: 1. Buy a cup mute. If you go to the music and arts website (http://www.musicarts.com) search cup mutes. Look to the left, and you can refine your search. Click on Trombone mutes. Then, look right above the first search result. You'll see a drop-down menu that says choose a sort order. You can sort it by price, high to low. Humes and Berg are cheap but quality mutes, this will work great. A cup mute is literally a straight mute with a plunger attached to the end. However, you're going to need a straight mute eventually, and that's where my second recommendation comes in. 2. Buy a harmon mute. Here's a direct link to the one I bought from Music and Arts.This is a cup mute, but you can take it apart. It separates into a plunger and a straight mute. Unfortunately, this is a little bit more pricey. I'd recommend buying this mute somewhere else though. Mine was shipped to me in what appeared to be a slightly used state. It works as desired, but not exactly new. This way you get you're cup, another plunger, and a straight. Hope this was helpful.
