Should you block your nasal cavity when singing?
I've heard of this technique helping you give a much resonant, clearer tone while singing. It seems like it works pretty well. When I come up from my diaphragm and aim at the hard palate, it's really smooth, and feels the same exact way when I raise my soft palate to achieve a really light, sweet sound. BUT, I always have to question myself because I know in life, things that feel so good aren't always right, haha. So, should us as singers be blocking our nasal cavity when singing? (except for when pronouncing N's and M's.)
The answer is no. Get a good voice coach. M's and N's are nasal conducted because you 1. have the lips closed and 2. the tongue sits on the arch of your palate so the sound can't come from the mouth. The soft plate is only used in lower notes and the frequency speed cannot project so it sound stays in the back of the mouth and is absorbed.. If you raise the uvula - not the soft palate - you are velaporting which will make the note clearer and should only be used while singing in a fast frequency. So a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing - get lessons - learn laryngeal biomechanics in it's entirety.
