How To Set Goals That Get Results

Goal setting doesn't come naturally to everyone. We have all sorts of things we want to accomplish. There are all kinds of changes we'd like to make. The problem, when it comes to setting goals, is that the process feels like wishing on a star or making a list for Santa Claus. In the end, these 'goals' – that are actually wishes – get few, if any, results. Then you're left wondering why so many people stress the importance of setting goals in the first place.

Setting the right kinds of goals is as important as setting goals in the first place. Keep these things in mind when setting your goals and you will be amazed at the difference it makes in your goals and the results you get from them.

Make Specific Goals

Vague goals get elusive results. When you are specific with creating your goals, you are much more likely to achieve them. You know what you want to happen in your life. Set specific goals that will help you accomplish that.

In other words, don't make a wish for a far off future. Instead, set very specific short-term goals that will help you accomplish the big picture you have in your mind.

Be very specific with these goals. Identify the goals. Write a plan for accomplishing the goal. Set a timetable for achieving the goal to add a certain sense of urgency to the process. Have another goal in place to pick up once this one is accomplished. A steady stream of goals is the perfect plan for long-term goal-setting success.

Create Actionable Goals

The real key for getting results from your goals is to make sure that all the goals you set are actionable. More importantly, they must be actions you are responsible for. Any goal that depends on someone other than you to be successful is not a good goal to set.

You are responsible for your actions. Those are the only actions you have any control whatsoever over. Setting goals that rely on someone else doing the right thing or following a certain course of actions is sure to hit more than a few bumps in the road along the way. It's also much more likely to fail.

Create goals that you and you alone are able to take action to achieve if you are serious about creating goals that get results.

Set Achievable Goals

There's nothing wrong with ambitious goals. They often bring out the best in people. But you do not want to set yourself up for total failure by creating impossible goals either.

A great compromise is to make those incredibly ambitious goals for the year and then set out to accomplish several smaller goals towards the larger 'big picture' goal you have in place.

These smaller goals allow you to celebrate small victories along the way, keep you motivated, and keep your eye on the ultimate prize. It's easy to get down and depressed when you don't see significant progress being made towards your goals. Bigger goals often get abandoned for that very reason. That is why the smaller goals are so helpful.
