Your input on a drum set idea?
So, I was at a symphony last night, and Collin Currie was going hard on a nice tom setup. He also had a kick drum to his right. So, my thought... Could I get a bass drum, and then use a double bass pedal that will allow me to offset it to the right. I will only use the left beater of the drum pedal. Could I expand my set with Orchestra/concert toms? Are these much different from the toms that come with shell kits? Basically, I want a tom-heavy set, with toms that are rich and deep. Yes to utilizing concert toms? Or no? And would using a double bass pedal as a single bass pedal but only with the left beater be a decent idea? Any danger that the left beater would not function as well? Is it meant to be strictly supplementary? Thanks guys.
Yes, you can set up double pedal as sort of a "remote" single pedal off to the side. Depending on the quality of the pedal and how well you have it anchored, it should play OK. Perhaps not as "tight " as a direct chain drive pedal. My experience is that for what most people refer to as "rich and deep" tom sounds, 2 heads are the sound you are usually looking for. Concert type single head toms are better for more of a fundamental tone. There are no rules. Experiment until you get a kit that sounds and plays how you like it. That is one of the fun things about percussion.
