Becoming a skilled drummer.?
I played concert percussion all through high school. I know how to read music and good stick technique. I have recently just purchased a drumset and was more or less wondering where to start. How long would it take for me to become a skilled drumset player? Are there any functions I could go to to meet and interact with other players? The drummers I would like to play like someday would be mike portnoy, mike mangini,virgil donati and marco minneamann. I know to play at a level even close to theirs it take years and year. Im only 20 but im afraid I my be starting too late to be a great player.
Greatness is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Even geniuses need to practice intensely to get to the high level they've attained. You really don't need much formal instruction to use drums (though obviously it would help if you can afford it). Simply listen to your favorite songs and focus your attention on the drumline which revolves around a fairly simple basis. Once you've got that down, you learn the idiosyncratic bits of flair that the drummer adds to the beat here and there. You're building a skillset with tiny pieces. With practice, these bits and pieces become natural, and playing along with the music becomes an organic unconscious process. But it's baby steps all the way there, and there's no shame in learning to walk before you run. Just learn simple beats first and build in pieces. You can develop a personal style later when you've learned how to tie the pieces together through lots of experience.
